As a member of Generation Z who has authentically experienced the era of analog to the current digital age, I believe I have lived through the rapidly changing paradigm.
I was wandering around the LACMA, overwhelmed by numerous incredible artworks. Amidst this, I stumbled upon a secretive space, a recreated old warehouse, which unexpectedly ignited a surge of inspiration within me. The cramped rooms, the small spaces – it felt as if I had been living confined within these tiny confines since birth.
Despite being born on this vast planet called Earth, my footprint seemed to occupy so little of its expanse. However, upon reflection, life within those narrow and confined spaces wasn't as bad as it might seem. Childhood memories of marble games with friends at school, competitive horse racing games bought for five hundred won at stationery stores, tremblingly holding onto my parents' hands while experiencing the first roller coaster ride at an amusement park – countless warm-hearted people passing by, even balloons dancing in the wind as I stared blankly.
‘The Red’ not only describes my imprisoned self within those limited box-like spaces of my childhood but also represents the influx of memories that permeate into that confinement. Along the branches of memories, I journey. I journey accompanied by the twigs of reminiscences. I attempted to unravel the question of where I come from and where I am headed.
*I incorporated nostalgic objects by training AI with machine learning, using images of toy horses, marbles, slides, ferris wheels onto hand-painted acrylic painting.
*Animations were added to these images, which pop up when approached by people.
*The electronic devices used on the media wall are cellphones, laptops, and iPads that I actually used. (2009~present)
